Your base: The best hotel in Europe

Really! Don't take our word for it: The Hotel Belvedere is the top hotel in Europe in the TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice awards, and sixth in the whole wide world. They know how to look after you.

It's not just a great hotel, though: it's a great cycling hotel. For a start, there's a huge fleet of DeRosa hire bikes, so you don't have to take your own, although you can if you want. Whatever you decide to ride, your bike will be well looked after by the on-site mechanic. There's a secure bike shed and a workshop too.

In the cycling season the whole hotel is set up for riding. There's as many as five guided rides a day to suit all abilities; they leave after breakfast and are all back by about 2pm. You can have a packed lunch to take with you, and there's a huge and varied buffet every day when you return.

Afternoons you can spend in the extensive Spa and Wellness Centre, or by the pool with a beer, or you can wander into town, or to the beach, or even head out on your bike again if you’re feeling fit. In the evening there's a fantastic three-course meal with loads of options, and house wine included. Remember to chuck your cycling kit in the basket when you get back and it'll be freshly laundered and ready for you to wear again by the time you head up for bed.

The riding: beautiful vistas, challenging terrain

There's lots of fantastic riding within reach of the Belvedere. Each of the hilltop towns – Montescudo, Gradara, Gemmano, San Leo, Verucchio... the list is almost endless – is a gem, usually discovered at the end of a testing climb and with a cafe serving cakes for a euro a piece. The university city of Urbino and the republic of San Marino are both within reach, as is the 1,250m Giro d'Italia summit finish at Eremo: remember that you're starting from sea level, too.

There's the imposing Furlo Gorge with its sinuous road trapped between high limestone cliffs. There's the beautiful Panoramico along the cliffs to the south of Riccione, overlooking the Adriatic. And all the time you're in the company of guides who know the area intimately, so there's no getting lost or stopping to check your bearings. Plus you're allowed to sit behind them and suck their wheels when there's a headwind. You're paying, after all.

> Interested? Make an enquiry below Italy Week: what to expect

We’ve put together a great itinerary for Italy week, cherry picking the best bits of all the weeks we’ve spent at the Hotel Belvedere. Here’s what we’ve got in store for you...

Sunday: Free entry to the Gran Fondo Riccione* (140km/100km)

You’ll get the evening on Saturday to relax and get acquainted with the hotel, and then it’s straight into the riding! The first ride is the challenging Gran Fondo Riccione, with options of either 100km or 140km around the Emilia-Romagna region with thousands of other riders.

Your Gran Fondo package includes entry, of course, and the hotel will deal with the registration, and collect your race package for you. There’ll be a pre-ride briefing with tips for getting the most out of your ride, and on the day you’ll get a hearty breakfast before heading out to tackle the hills. Belvedere Tour Guide Filippo will be riding too, and will be on hand to assist you if you need it.

*You must confirm your participation to the hotel before 28th February 2018. There is a €70 supplement for the Gran Fondo entry if you’re staying for five nights

Monday (and every day!): guided rides for all abilities

The Hotel Belvedere has a group of friendly and dedicated ride guides who’ll lead you round the best routes in the area. If you don’t fancy any of the headline rides listed on the other days here then there are always rides to cater for all abilities, and they all end back at the hotel with a delicious buffet lunch.

Tuesday: Barbecue at Marina’s country house

One of the highlights of any trip to the Belvedere is barbecue day! We’ll ride out to Marina’s country house – different lengths of ride out will be available – to sample the best of what the region has to offer. The ride home is normally a bit of a wobble!

Wednesday: Urbino and Furlo Gorge (135km, 2,800m)

We’ll head out early from Riccione and strike out for Urbino for a coffee, before continuing south to the beautiful Furlo Gorge. This is a long day in the saddle with some challenging climbs, but it’s well worth it for the fantastic views along the way.

Thursday: Wine and cheese tasting at Agricola Muretti

The Emilia-Romagna region is home to some fine produce, and it’d be a shame to spend a week there without trying any, right? One day’s riding will end at Agricola Muretti in the hills above Riccione, where you’ll get to sample a range of local produce before sitting down for a freshly-prepared lunch.

Friday: Cippo Carpegna (130km, 3,300m)

Tour-de-France-winning cyclist Marco Pantani is a legend in these parts, and the Cippo was his favourite training climb. Rising 610m in its six-kilometre length it’s a serious challenge, but you’ve got to get there first: the bottom is over 700m up and with the hotel at sea level there’s some work to do on the way! The payback though is that there’s plenty of downhill on the way back!

What’s included in the Italy Week package:

  • Hotel room (5-night and 7-night options available)
  • Breakfast, evening meal and cyclist’s buffet
  • Wine with evening meal
  • Guided rides every day with the team
  • Cycling kit laundry (€5 refundable deposit)
